Sue Mingus, April 2, 1930 - September 24, 2022

It is with great sadness that we relay the news of Sue Graham Ungaro Mingus’ passing. She died peacefully with all her children and grandchildren around her, on September 24, on the 15th anniversary of her brother Richard Graham’s passing.

Sue made an indelible imprint on anyone she met with her passion and perseverance. Her devotion to and advocacy on behalf of other people’s art and careers was unsurpassed, whether to that of her late husband Charles Mingus or the many Mingus Legacy musicians she treated as her extended family. She was an artist, author, journalist, educator, and a doting mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. As quick with an elegantly cutting joke as she was with a laugh or encouraging shout, her uncompromising sense of justice and energy was an inspiration to everyone she met. Neither humbled by age nor infirmity, she remained in good cheer to the very end, enjoying visits and gatherings with her close friends and family. She is survived by her daughter Susanna and her son Roberto, children of her first husband, sculptor Alberto Ungaro, her four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Memorial services and other details to be announced when available.
