BOOK THE MINGUS BANDS
Several dynamic repertory ensembles, featuring the best musicians in the world, spread the amazing compositional legacy of Charles Mingus around the world:
The 14-piece MINGUS BIG BAND
Critical and popular acclaim and a weekly residency in NYC, for over three decades
Their album LIVE AT JAZZ STANDARD was recorded live and broadcast by NPR and won the 2010 Grammy
In 2022, they were featured for the premiere episode of NEXT, Live at the Kennedy Center on PBS on Mingus, and released a new album, The Charles Mingus Centennial Sessions. Volume two will be released in 2024.
The five to seven-piece MINGUS DYNASTY
the original Mingus repertory band, formed to celebrate Mingus Music with a tribute concert.
The band plays original arrangements of Charles Mingus, as well as using their decades of experience playing in Mingus bands to collectively arrange on the bandstand
The 10-piece MINGUS ORCHESTRA with instrumentation that has included bass clarinet, bassoon, French horn, guitar, and more.
A domestic tour 2010-2011 was made possible by the National Endowment for the Arts as part of American Masterpieces: Three Centuries of Artistic Genius. The band has a week-long residency at Birdland in December 2023.
The 31-piece Mingus EPITAPH, Mingus's 2-hour masterwork, posthumously premiered in 1989 and conducted by Gunther Schuller, and presented in 2007 at Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Walt Disney Center, Chicago Symphony Center, and the Tri-C Jazz Festival. In 2022 it was successfully staged with half Mingus repertory musicians and half Yale students, setting a model for future tours and partnerships.
Jazz Workshop and the Mingus repertory bands collaborate with our non-profit educational foundation Let My Children Hear Music, Inc. (The Charles Mingus Institute) for educational and performance activities such as the Charles Mingus High School Competition and Festival each February in NYC.
We will be happy to discuss the ensemble or musicians best suited to your needs: the size of your venue and budget, your schedule, your target audience, and possible educational residencies or workshops.
