On tonight’s extended show we’ll celebrate the 100th birthday of the mighty jazz bassist, composer, and musical visionary, Charles Mingus. We’ll be joined by special guests Boris Kozlov, bassist and long-time co-leader of the Mingus Big Band and Orchestra; Zach Kirsimae, co-director of The Charles Mingus Institute, which keeps Mingus’s larger-than-life legacy alive; and Mingus’s youngest son, Eric Mingus, himself a bassist, musical inventor and classically-trained vocalist par excellence. Musical selections featuring Mingus on the bass include Wednesday Night Prayer Meeting, Goodbye Pork Pie Hat, Oh Lord, Don’t Drop That Atomic Bomb on Me, Stormy Weather (with Eric Dolphy), as well as Mingus compositions played by The Mingus Big Band, including Baby Take a Chance With Me (music and lyrics by Charles Mingus, vocal by Frank Ku-umba Lacey), and Meditations on A Pair of Wire Cutters.
