Join us as we discuss the instrumental prowess and bass lines of Charles Mingus, with listening examples and expert knowledge from modern masters of the instrument as they speak from their own perspectives of holding the bass chair in this exciting and varied compositional legacy. There will be a brief Q&A at the end.

Boris Kozlov is a two-time Grammy award-winning musician. He serves as bassist, arranger, and co-musical director for Mingus Big Band, Mingus Dynasty, and Mingus Orchestra. With an impeccable time feel and deep dig, he's been first-call for important jazz acts such as Michael Brecker, Lew Tabackin, Jean-Michel Pilc, among others. He also leads his own creative projects, and is a driving force in some of the most exciting rhythm sections in modern jazz.

Andrew McKee is a storied bassist and compassionate educator steeped in the Mingus tradition. He has a unique style and hard-swinging approach that evolved naturally from his formative years on Philadelphia’s jazz scene working with Hank Mobley, Johnny Hartman, Slide Hampton, and Philly Joe Jones. After arriving in New York City he's played with Elvin Jones, Chet Baker, Michel Petrucciani, Mingus Big Band and Mingus Dynasty. He is a published author, and professor at The New School's School of Jazz & Contemporary Music where he teaches Mingus Music.

Michael Richmond is a prolific veteran bassist and generous spirit. He first began working with Sue Mingus and Mingus Dynasty in 1979. Throughout his career Michael has been featured on over 350 recordings and has performed with Stan Getz, Dizzy Gillespie, Bobby McFerrin, Ravi Shankar, Elvin Jones, Gil Evans, Mingus bands, and many others. He has won Grammy awards with Miles Davis, Quincy Jones, and the Philadelphia Orchestra, and has traveled the world performing and teaching.
